Chinese Water Dragons

Chinese Water Dragons

Reptile

Chinese water dragons are largely insectivorous as juveniles, shifting toward a more omnivorous mix of insects, occasional pinkies, and some plant matter as they mature.

The Best Feeders

Mealworms, superworms, and Dubia roaches all work well — water dragons are also known to get bored of eating the same feeder repeatedly, so rotating between them keeps appetite up and improves nutritional balance across different fat and nutrient profiles.

Feeding by Age
  • Juveniles (0–1 year): Medium mealworms daily, sized to the dragon's head width.
  • Adults: Large superworms every 3–5 days, with vegetables and salad offered daily.
Calcium & Gut-Loading

Dust insects with calcium at every feeding, and calcium with D3 weekly if your dragon lacks UVB. Whole prey like pinkies should stay occasional — once a week at most. Our gut-loading guide covers what we feed our colonies before shipping.

Tips & Cautions

Water dragons housed in cramped or insecure enclosures are prone to stress behaviors like nose-rubbing against the glass — enclosure size matters here more than humidity alone. A secure, appropriately sized setup with good nutrition tends to produce calmer feeding behavior and less food refusal.
