Frilled Dragons
Reptile
Frilled dragons are highly insectivorous, arboreal ambush hunters — in the wild they wait in the trees for prey to pass below. Feeding should work with that instinct rather than against it.
Feeder Choices
Dubia roaches are an excellent staple — they climb well, which suits a frilled dragon's arboreal hunting style, and they're easier to digest than harder-bodied insects. Mealworms and superworms add variety for sub-adults and adults.
Feeding Schedule
- Juveniles: Up to 3 feedings a day of Small dubia roach nymphs, tapering to once daily by around 2 months old, offered on branches or elevated dishes.
- Adults: Fed daily or every other day — offer as many Large dubia roach nymphs as your dragon eats within 5–10 minutes.
Gut-Loading & Dusting
Dust insects with calcium at most feedings, and calcium with D3 weekly when UVB lighting is absent. Details on gut-loading are in our gut-loading guide.
A Few Things to Watch For
Offer insects at branch height rather than on the substrate — frilled dragons spend most of their time elevated and may miss feeders placed on the enclosure floor.
